Mary Alice (Steves) Smith, 81, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at Topeka Presbyterian Manor.
Mary was born March 28, 1934, in Topeka, KS, to Harold W. and Miriam Steves. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1952 and attended Washburn University. Mary married her high school sweetheart, Robert D. "Bob" Smith, on May 31, 1953. Together they raised five children. Besides raising her family she worked for Pellitier's, Southwestern Bell, Stormont-Vail and Dr. Doug Iliff's office. She was a life-long member of Lowman United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. Mary was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She was a charter member of the Topeka High School Booster Club. Mary was her family's biggest cheerleader and supported anything in which they were involved.
She is survived by her five children, Jackie Howard, Dean (Nancy) Smith, Gregg (Wendy) Smith, Linda (Brian) Larson, and Nancy (Kevin) Garner; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Hosie, Clint (Erin) Collier, Nicholas (Catherine) Smith, Emily (Tyler) Dieker, Kyle Smith, Matthew (Megan) Smith, Jana (Ryan) Tenbrink, Tanner (Danielle) Smith, Ashley Evenson, Brandon Evenson, Bryce (Amanda) Garner and Betsy (Peter) Brogren; 18 great-granchildren, Jake, Abigail, Brooke, Nora, Mattie, Piper, Victoria, Tessa, Lauren, Annie, Cara, Gavin, Graham, Carson, Brylee, Cooper, Aubree, Cameron and two more on the way; brother, Harold W. Steves, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Judy Steves.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Smith; parents; and brother, Rodney Steves.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 8, 2016, at Lowman United Methodist Church, 4101 SW 15th Street, Topeka, KS 66604. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS.
