After being honorably discharged from duty, Marvin worked as a diesel mechanic in Topeka, Kansas. He became the first in the country to achieve the level of Master Technician. He was employed as a Service Manager at Noller Ford Truck Center at the time of retirement.

Marvin was preceded in death by his son, Robert Marvin Varner, parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Marvin Varner, brother, Clyde McDermeit, second wife, Ivy Varner and the mother of his three children, Carol J Doel.
He is survived by two children, David Varner of Topeka, KS and Susan Haefele of Lewisville, TX, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three sisters, Wilda Jean Graves, Dorma Miller and Erma Rosetta.
