Marvin Maydew

Marvin Wayne Maydew, age 88, of Topeka, died on Monday, July 7, 2014. He was born in Lebanon, Kansas on June 12, 1926, the third of nine children of Kermit A. and Lelia Inez (Phifer) Maydew. Marvin was raised on a farm in northeast Smith County, Kansas.

After attending the University of Colorado, Marvin earned bachelor of business administration and juris doctor degrees from Washburn University of Topeka. He began an accounting career at John Morrell & Co., followed by work in public accounting and the establishment of his own firm in 1956. After 35 years of accounting practice, he merged his firm with Kennedy & Coe and retired a year later. After his retirement from accounting, Marvin entered the practice of law in 1992. He was an adjunct professor for the Washburn University School of Law for seven years. Marvin retired from the practice of law in 2012.

Marvin served in leadership positions on a number of professional and civic boards including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants national review board, board of directors of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants, board of trustees of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants Education Foundation, and the board of the Topeka Symphony Society. He was an enthusiastic member of the Downtown Topeka Rotary. Governor Robert Docking appointed him as chairman of the Kansas Board of Accountancy. He was appointed to the Information Network of Kansas, Inc. by Governor Mike Hayden and was reappointed by Governors Joan Finney and Bill Graves.

Marvin was very proud of his rural heritage and enjoyed sharing stories about growing up on the farm in Smith County. One of his favorite hobbies was singing in barbershop quartets, including the "Humbugs" and the "Top Steps." He had a wonderful and rich bass voice which, together with his relaxed and sociable manner, made for very enjoyable times.

Marvin married Ona Mae Stump in 1947, and they had two children. They were divorced in 2002. Marvin's former wife Ona, son Ken (Sally) Maydew of Niwot, Colorado, and his daughter Nancy (Paul) Dixon of Topeka survive. Six grandchildren also survive – Mariah Maydew, Micah (Jamie) Maydew, Dutch Maydew, Dana Maydew, Suzanne (Michael) Dixon, and Kyle Clifton – along with two great-grandsons, Cameron Maydew and Jackson Dixon. Five of Marvin's siblings survive: Gene Maydew, Norris (Vera) Maydew, Marjorie Bell, Ann (Don) Norwood, and Gary (Nancy) Maydew. Three of his siblings predeceased him – Randall Maydew, Robert Maydew, and Edra Maydew.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 11 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. A graveside committal service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12 at Cora (Cedar Hill) Cemetery in Smith County, Kansas.
