Marvin J. Owen, 84, of Topeka, KS, compassionate, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 surrounded by his loved ones. Marvin was born January 16, 1926 in Topeka, KS to Hattie Jane (Wilkerson) and Arjal Owen. He was a graduate of Highland Park High School. He served in the Merchant Marines from September 1943 to April 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the South Pacific from May 1944 to April 1947 with the Second Marines. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1981. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka, KS and belonged to the Disabled American Veterans.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Hazel Blankenship and Ella Joan Marn and a brother, Bill Owen. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene B. Owen; daughter; Nancy L. Davis and her husband Jim; son; Mark J. Owen and his wife Lisa; daughter, Connie L. Smith and her husband Mike, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. We wish to thank the staff of Hillside Village Nursing Home and the Heart of America Hospice for their affectionate care to our family.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW Tenth Avenue, Topeka KS 66604. Marvin will lie in state after 3:00 p.m Friday, February 5, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Burial will be at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Topeka, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart of America Hospice in care of Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
