Marvin D. Gilkeson went to his Lord on Saturday, December 25, 2010 in Lakewood, Colorado. His daughter, Cathy, and Cathy's mother, Mary B. Johnson of Topeka, were at his bedside. He was born December 22, 1923 in Topeka, the son of Leonard and Minnie Gilkeson.
He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Lynn Gilkeson of Littleton, CO, and a brother, Leonard Gilkeson, also of Colorado. A son, Rex A. Gilkeson, preceded him in death on December 24, 1976.
Marvin served as an Aviation Radioman 3/C in the US Navy during WW2. His service was in the Pacific Theatre, and included the time of the liberation of the Philippines.
He received a BS Degree from the University of Missouri, and a Masters Degree in Education from The George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN. Marvin taught at Highland Park High School and ended his teaching career after many years at Topeka West High School. He taught biology and also coached basketball and tennis. Following his retirement, he moved to Pueblo, CO to be near his daughter and brother, and to enjoy his beloved Rocky Mountains.
Marvin was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Topeka.
Memorial and inurnment services were held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Olinger Crown Hill Tower of Memories in Lakewood, CO with military honors provided by the US Navy.
Elder Mary B. Johnson, Community of Christ Church presided at the service.
