Marvin A. Carlson

March 7, 1928 — May 7, 2022

Marvin A. Carlson, 94, of Topeka, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

He was born March 7, 1928, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of John August and Edith Marie (Swanson) Carlson.
After he graduated from Topeka High school in 1946, he attended Washburn University and received a bachelor's degree in English. After several years he went back to school at Central Technical Institute in Kansas City for their Electronics program.

While still in Topeka, Marvin was employed for the Kansas Highway Patrol as a radio dispatcher. Then from 1951-1955 he served in the United States Air Force as a Chapel Welfare Specialist. Shortly after he got out, he moved his family to Kansas City where he taught English, Mathematics, and Computer Electronics at the Central Technical Institute from 1959-1966. Then using his skills with computers, he worked for Western Electric in Kansas City from 1966-1975. Moving back to Topeka, he worked as a computer analyst, first at Security Benefit Insurance Group from 1975-1982, and finally at the Department of Revenue from 1983-1991 when he retired.

Marvin's faith was always very important to him. He attended the Covenant Church, both in Topeka and Kansas City. He was a very active member as a choir member, soloist, sound technician and as a deacon.

As a youth at Camp Wood, he met a cute girl from Brantford Covenant Church in North Central Kansas. Later when she had moved to Topeka for business school, they met again in the college age group at Bethel Covenant and fell in love. Marvin married Ruth Margaret Jurey on June 9, 1950. He and Ruth were wonderful and beloved parents of five children.

In his spare time, Marvin enjoyed being outdoors with his family. They enjoyed many camping trips, boating and water skiing. He liked to read paperback books and work on Jigsaw puzzles. He loved to keep in touch with his family and friends. In his later years at the retirement community, he was known for his kind and happy attitude, and that he was the guy who did the jigsaw puzzles.

He is survived by his children, Margo (Joel) Satterfield, Douglas (Nancy) Carlson, Cameron (Karen) Carlson, Susan (Jerry) Barker and Timothy Carlson; grandchildren, Derek "DJ" Satterfield, Cindy (Jim) Purtle, Kevin (Jessie) Carlson, Stephen Carlson, Kaylyn (Mark) Soni and Curtis (Tanen) Carlson; great grandchildren, Laura, Jack, Andy, Jonny, Ezra, Ruby, Leona, Saul, Cyrus, Lydia, Grayden and Everett and his sister-in-law Orcena Jurey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and his parents.
