Marvin Bonjour, 87, Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022.
He was born May 16, 1934, in Onaga, Kansas, the son of Lester and Helen (Banta) Bonjour.
He graduated from Washburn Rural High School and attended Washburn University where he played on the football team. He also played football for the United States Army after joining the military.
From 1968 to 1969 he served as a deputy for the Shawnee County Sheriff's Department. In 1969, he was recruited to start a school safety program and became Chief of Security for Topeka Public Schools, where he retired in 1999. Marvin received Recognition of Outstanding Service as Director of Communications by the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers from 1990-1992. After retiring, he was a security officer at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
Marvin was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Topeka and the Fraternal Order of Police.
On September 9, 1997, he married Eileen Marie Bonjour in Las Vegas, Nevada. She preceded him in death on June 4, 2020. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his children, Robert Boyd, Bill (Gabi) Bonjour, Rhonda Bonjour, Kathi (Brent) Sweet, Mitchell Bonjour, and Sonja (Mike) Pressgrove; grandchildren, Adam, Brian, Hannah, Arthur, Ashley, Adrienne, Austin, Amber, Britni, Bayli, Blake, Aja, Taylor, Matthew, and Abby; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Marvin was an avid sports fan and knew every stat for every game and player. He was a very successful coach for the American Legion Baseball League, having several of the players he coached go onto play professionally. You could always find him watching one game on TV and listening to another game on the radio.
Family will greet friends from 6-8pm Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2pm Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum.
