Marvel E. Fisher, 88, Ottawa, formerly of Overbrook, passed away peacefully at Ottawa Retirement Village (ORV) on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. She had been a resident of ORV for the past three years. She was born November 16, 1925 to Edward and Eva McCain in Michigan Valley, KS.
She married John D. Harmison in Washington DC, in October of 1945. They later divorced.
Marvel spent much of her life caring for others, serving as a dental assistant in Washington, DC, and as a medical assistant to Drs. Pyle and Gray in Topeka. After earning her LPN, Marvel worked as a geriatric nurse at Brookside Manor Nursing Home in Overbrook and later at Westwood Manor in Topeka.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren, current events, cooking, and hosting lavish holiday gatherings for her family in her home. Marvel loved the countryside and often took long walks on her farm accompanied by her beloved dog, Bear. She relished the changing seasons and always found magic in nature.
Mrs. Fisher was a fifty year resident of Overbrook and a member of the Appanoose Baptist Church in Pomona.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Edward Clark McCain, Jr., and Alva H. McCain. Survivors include her son, Edward D. Harmison and wife Cheri, Overbrook; daughter Susan D. Harmison and husband Matt M. Matthews, Ottawa; sister, Sharon Lee Wilhelm, Annapolis, MD; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the nurses and staff at Ransom Memorial Hospital and Ottawa Retirement Village for the compassionate care and support they gave Marvel and her family.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Appanoose Baptist Church in Pomona.
