Martin L. Miller, 69, of Topeka, passed away on April 5, 2018. Born April 11, 1948 in Bronx, New York, he was the son of Martin P. and Helen D. Miller.

He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in Bronx, where he was an accomplished swimmer as well as class president. Throughout his early life, he was a life guard at Orchard Beach in New York City, and many of his happiest early memories took place during summers on the water's edge.

Upon graduation from high school, Martin accepted a full-ride swimming scholarship to attend New York University. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Commerce before moving on to St. John's University to study business administration and the University of Kansas to study law.

In his time with the Douglas County DA's office, Martin made many good friends and enjoyed working hard to make Lawrence a stronger, healthier community. He was one of very few court-appointed defense attorneys for juvenile cases, helping young children through troubled times. Later in life, he worked for the Disciplinary Administrative Board for the State of Kansas Supreme Court.

Martin had strong partners throughout his life. In his 20s, Martin married Marcia Buller, and together had three sons; Matthew, Martin "Sonny", and Malcolm. They later divorced, and he later married Sarah Ubel and had two children; Anna and Henry. They later divorced. Martin lived his life surrounded by love, but those who knew him best would agree that the true loves of his life were his kids.

Martin was passionate about singing, swimming, raising a family, cooking, outdoors. He sang and was a past-president for the Lawrence Civic Choir, was a member of the Men's Chorale, and several musicals at the Lawrence Community Theater. He loved to travel back home to New York City and out to Long Island with his kids for vacations. Martin also enjoyed going to Wyoming to hike and spend holidays with his family.
His favorite dish to prepare was lasagna, which his father taught him how to make.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he was a mentor for several people and helped them on the road to recovery.

Martin was preceded in death by his son, Noah Lawrence Miller.

He is survived by his five children, Matthew, Martin R. "Sonny", Malcolm, Anna and Henry; three sisters; Pat, Helen, and Joanie; and many other friends and family.
