Martin Meisel

Martin Meisel, 90, of Overbrook, passed away Monday, September 13, 2021.

Martin Meisel was born on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation on March 31, 1931, southwest of Chadwick, North Dakota at the Meisel ranch. He attended school in Selfridge, ND and graduated from McLaughlin High School in 1949. Martin worked full-time on the Meisel ranch raising pure-bred Angus cattle and Columbia sheep.

In 1956, he was drafted into the US Army and traveled to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas and Fort Bliss, Texas for basic training. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany with the 63rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery as a radar operator where he earned the rank of Specialist 4 and later received an award of the Cold War. After many letters to and from Frances Swartz, they married on June 6, 1959 in Grafton, ND making their home at the Meisel ranch.

He was active in the local school district serving as board member and treasurer for 10 years. He was a leader of the 4-H club for 25 years and a 20-year volunteer for the Department of Agriculture. Martin was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

Martin will be missed by his son Lewis, his grandsons and their wives, and his many great-grandchildren. He was known as "Grandpa" to everyone and will be missed by all.

Due to COVID-19, there will not be a memorial service. Interment will take place at the Black Hills National Cemetery in South Dakota at a later date.
