Marjorie Elizabeth West, 83, Topeka, died Sat. Nov. 6, 2004 at Midland Hospice House.
She was born Jan. 19, 1921 in Mitchell Co., KS, daughter of Kyle & Edna Kaul Simmons. She graduated from Barnard High School in 1938, attended Kansas Wesleyan College for one year and graduated from Kansas State University in 1942 with a degree in Home Economics and Education. She taught school for several years, worked as director of food service at First Presbyterian Church and Topeka High School and was supervisor of the service area at Washburn Univ. until she retired Jan. 1986.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Topeka, where she served as Sunday school teacher, food service director, elder, deacon, and trustee, and was active in church circle. She was a member of Families for Mental Health, Topeka Home Economics Assoc., Washburn Retirees, and Clovia Sorority Alumni Assoc.
She married Gordon B. West of Manhattan, KS Nov. 25, 1942 at Warrenton, VA. He died Feb. 7, 1998. Also preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers and a sister. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn E. Harrison, Newbern, TN and Rosalyn A. and husband Mark McLelland, Topeka, and one son Daniel W. West, Topeka; four grandchildren, Catherine A.and husband John Binder, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Mary Beth and husband Keith Fortner, Martin, TN, Amy E. McLelland, Kansas City, MO and Scott D. McLelland, Topeka; and one great granddaughter, Samantha Fortner, Martin, TN.
Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church 1:00PM Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. West will lie in state from noon Tuesday, November 8, 2004 at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel and the family will receive friends from 5:30pm-7:00pm that evening.
