Marjorie Beard Garlinghouse Lovewell, 100, died September 21, 2015 in San Francisco, California.

Marjorie was born July 16, 1915 in Baldwin, Kansas, the daughter of Bernice Cosper and Dr. William Earl Beard. She attended grade schools in Waverly, Ottawa and Topeka before enrolling in Topeka High School, graduating in 1933 as part of the second class to graduate from the school's current location. Marjorie then attended Washburn University, where she graduated in 1938, majoring in music. While at Washburn, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, which she remained active with throughout her adult life.

She taught in a one-room schoolhouse outside of Overbrook, Kansas, was an assistant kindergarten teacher at Lincoln School in Topeka, Kansas and taught at Harveyville High School for one year.

Marjorie married F. Mark Garlinghouse on November 18, 1939 and became an active supporter of his career with AT&T. The family moved from Topeka to New York City, and then to St. Louis in 1950, and back to the New York City area in 1965. Following Mark's passing in 1982, Marjorie remarried Joe Lovewell, a lifelong friend from Topeka, Kansas. They retired to San Francisco where Joe died in 2005.

Marjorie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt. Her passion for music and the value of education carried through all chapters of her life. She was a founder of Topeka Collegiate School, an active patron of music and the arts and a supporter of women's issues, including Planned Parenthood.

In addition to her husbands, Marjorie was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Beard Harwell, of Fresno, California. She is survived by her three sons, Kent (Susan) and Webb (Julie) of Topeka, Kansas and Whitney (Nancy) of Essex, Connecticut, as well as 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, October 1, at First United Methodist Church of Topeka, 600 SW Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS 66603. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Washburn University Foundation (School of Music) 1729 SW MacVicar Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604 or Topeka Collegiate School 2200 SW Eveningside Drive, Topeka, Kansas 66614.
