Marius Albert Dimmitt, Sr., the son of Herbert Andrew and Mary Duncan Dimmitt, was born on October 7, 1933, in Kansas City, Kansas. He died on Monday, December 19, 2011 at Brewster Health Center in Topeka.
Albert graduated from Washington High School and earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Kansas State University. He also earned master's and Ph.D. degrees in history from the University of Kansas. A forty-five year career in college teaching and administration followed. He served at Garden City Community College, Southwestern College, Bowling Green State University (Firelands), Tennessee Wesleyan College, and Kansas Wesleyan University before retiring in 2001 from Penn Valley Community College.
Albert was a member and past moderator of First Congregational Church and a member of the Topeka South Rotary Club, where he was proud to be a Paul Harris Fellow.
Albert married JoAnn Snyder on October 4, 1953; they were later divorced. He married Jean Pollard Atkins on August 17, 1991. She survives. He is also survived by his children M. Albert Dimmitt, Jr. (Kay), Daniel Bruce Dimmitt, Janice Dimmitt Bode (Gene), Cathy Dimmitt Field (Roger), as well as his stepchildren Leslie Atkins Durham (Craig) and Christopher Douglas Matt Atkins (Sharon). In addition, he is survived by two brothers H. Bruce Dimmitt (Marilyn) and Lawrence A. Dimmitt (Lois), and a sister Rosemary York (Robert), fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son David Wayne Dimmitt.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, at First Congregational Church in Topeka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, Metropolitan Community College Scholarship Fund, the Brewster Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
