Marion E. Mays, 86, Topeka, formerly of Pittsburg, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at a local hospital.
Marion was born January 29, 1923 in Pawnee Station, the son of Clarence and Susanna (Morris) Mays. He grew up in McCune and Cherokee and graduated from Crawford County Community High School.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 20th Air Force, as a radio operator in the South Pacific during World War II.
He was employed as an Engineer for McNally Pittsburg Corporation in Pittsburg for 32 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, American Legion, Capital Post #1 in Topeka, and the Forty & Eight Society.
Marion married Lilliemae Norris on November 26, 1942 in Girard. She died January 20, 1990. Survivors include daughters, Deanna Stroud, Wichita; Lori Mays, Richmond, VA; son, Doug Mays and wife, Lena, Topeka; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Lone Elm Cemetery, Columbus. Marion will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
