Marie Bertles, 87, of Eskridge, passed away Friday, July 2, 2004 at a Topeka Hospital.
She was born January 8, 1917 in Manhattan, New York, the daughter of James and Mary McKenna Lacey. Marie had retired with her husband to Fallon, NV. Following her husbands death she returned to Eskridge in 2000 to be near her family.
She was happily married 60 years to Larry ( Pop) Bertles. He preceded her in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her son, Larry (Buzz) Bertles, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Kopp, Eskridge; her grandchildren, Susan Stephenson, David Kopp, Carol Kopp, Danny Kopp, Corky Kopp, ten great grandchildren, and four great- great grandchildren.
Marie and her husband loved the desert. They enjoyed prospecting for gold in the western deserts. They were both World Record Gold Panning Champions, and are recognized in the Gold Panning Hall of Fame and Guinness Book of World Records.
They were both avid golfers.
Cremation is planned. Private family memorial services will be held. Marie and Larry's cremated remains will be scattered together at a later date. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of cremation.
