Margaret Jane Orrick, 92, Topeka, a native and long time resident of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 10, 2005, at the Presbyterian Manor in Topeka, Kansas.
Margaret was born at 1011 Laramie Street November 7, 1912, the daughter of Samuel K. and Jeanette D. (Thompson) McCrary.
Margaret was a long time ecucator in the Atchison Public School System. She left a rich legacy with many students over the years. Margaret enjoyed watching her students grow, graduate from the Atchison school system and return to become community leaders. She retired from techaing in 1975 after a 42 year career in teaching.
Margaret graduated from high school in Atchison in 1931, and Highland Community College in 1933. She received a BS degree at Mount St. Scholastica in 1960. She began her teaching career in a one room school in a farming community. During her first year, she had 12 students in grades 1-5. She was paid $47.50 a month, from which she paid $12.00 a month for room and board. In addition to her teaching duties, she also was the janitor, built the fire in a pot-bellied stove to warm the room, and shoveled snow when necessary. She began her teaching career in the Atchison school system in 1943 and taught 5th Grade at Central School for thirty-two years. Teaching during W.W. II, Margaret taught the boys and girls how to knit and the class made lap robes for service men in training at Ft. Leavenworth. She taught at a time when there were no paraprofessionals, no buses, no special education, no breakfast or lunch and little technology other than typewriters.
After retirement, she enjoyed traveling and playing bridge. She and her cousin Jeanette spent many winters in Cape Coral, Florida, and she brought great joy and a lively sense of adventure as she visited family throughout the country. She was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhoold, Chapter FT and the First Presbyterian Church in Atchison.
Margaret is survived by two nephews, David Robinson of Chanute, Kansas and Stuart K. McCrary, Jr. of Winchester, Kentucky, and two nieces, Sara Steiner of Burlington, Kansas, and Sally Montgomery of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by 10 great nieces and nephews and 9 great-great nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 18, at the First Presbyterian Church in Atchison, Kansas. Inurnment will follow the memorial service at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Atchison, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church in Atchison.
