Margaret Louise McCausland was born September 12, 1924, in Vicksburg, Michigan, the only child of R. Carleton and Edith (Smith) Southworth.
After graduating from Ann Arbor High School in 1942, she enrolled in the University of Michigan, graduating in 1946 with Departmental Honors in English and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
After receiving a master's degree in English in 1947, Margaret began her college teaching career as an English instructor at Lake Erie College for Women in Painesville, Ohio. Leaving Lake Erie in 1950, she enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin serving as a teaching assistant until 1955 when she joined the faculty of the English Department of Washburn University of Topeka. There she met Hugh Glenn McCausland, Director of Theater at Washburn. They were married June 5, 1957, and both taught at Washburn until their retirement in 1983.
After Hugh's death in 2000, Margaret moved to Aldersgate in 2001, where she lived until her death on May 22, 2012.
No services are planned. Cremation is planned with burial of ashes in the family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library Foundation or Aldersgate Good Samaritan Fund. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel assisted in arrangements.
