Margaret Hensley VanVleck, 94, of Topeka, died on Friday, December 5, 2014.
Marge was born on May 26, 1920 in Hotchkiss, VA, the daughter of Willie Edward and Mary Leetha Layton. She attended local schools and graduated from Strayer Business College in Virginia.
Marge was married to Morgan Hensley on August 4, 1941 in St. Louis, MO; he preceded her in death on June 28, 1978. She later married Walter VanVleck on November 4, 1995 in Worthington, OH; he preceded her in death on January 14, 2007.
Marge worked for many years in the home improvement industry in sales and management. She was a member of the Topeka Women's Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was an avid bridge player and loved to play golf. Marge was a passionate sports fan (especially Ohio State): she enjoyed not only watching the games on TV but also attended numerous college games and the many sporting events of her grandchildren.
She treasured the time spent with her family and enjoyed playing card games with her grandchildren. She had a wonderful time traveling the world with both of her husbands, especially her annual trip to Hilton Head, SC.
Survivors include her son, Robert (Karen) Hensley of Monkton, MD; grandchildren, Morgan Hensley and Graham Hensley; two brothers, James (Betty Sue) Layton of Martinsville, VA and Skip Layton of St. Petersburg, FL; one sister, Wilma Thedford of Tallahassee, FL as well many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, by her two husbands, one brother, Ken Layton and one sister, Sylvia Swartzel.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka; a visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Burial of cremated remains will be held at a later date at Columbia Garden Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
