Maj. Albert V. Salzer, Ret. 92, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009 at his home. He was born on February 14, 1917 in Topeka, one of eight children born to Stephen and Mary Gollar Salzer. All five sons served in the military and at one point, all were serving our country during the same time period. He resided in Topeka for most of his life. Albert enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1937, serving in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War before retiring on January 1, 1966 at the rank of Major from the Air Force. He was a member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion and A.A.R.P. Albert married Josephine Young. She preceded him in death on September 28, 1969. He was also preceded in death by his long time companion, Iva D. Metzler. Survivors include his brother, William Salzer of Topeka, one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be presented by a burial detail from Whiteman Air Force Base, Knob Noster, MO. Maj. Salzer will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, 3800 S.E. Michigan Ave., Topeka, KS 66609.
