Mrs. Mabel Irene Covey, 99, of Topeka died on Friday, March 28, 2014 at McCrite Plaza. She was born September 9, 1914 at Denison, KS. She was the daughter of Emerick and Martha Richards Cutter. Her adopted parents were Oscar and Zella Britton of Clinton, KS.
She attended Lawrence High School and graduated from Oread High School at K.U.
She was married to Basil Covey in Lawrence July 30, 1934; he preceded her in death on January 9, 2011.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna (Don) Turner, and a son, Max B. Covey, both in Topeka. Her only grandchild is Julie Ann Turner in Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by two sisters, Lola Givens and Ethel Wendt.
Although she was a homemaker she directed boys and girls glee clubs and cooked in Huron High School two years. She was talented in organ and piano. She played for the Lions Club in Nortonville, Holton and Augusta. She entertained in several retirement and nursing homes.
She was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church, Topeka Organ Club, TARTA, KRTA and AARP. During her years at McCrite, Mabel and her family played cards every Sunday afternoon. The family would especially like to thank the McCrite staff for all their loving care.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka; the family will receive friends from noon until service time. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
