M. Day Kaufmann

April 3, 1921 — March 12, 2021

Mayer Day Kaufmann, 99, of Topeka, KS, passed away Friday, March 12, 2021. He was
born April 3, 1921 in Ft. Scott, KS, the son of Mayer and Violet Kaufmann. He graduated from Ft.
Scott High School then attended Ft. Scott Jr. College and Northwestern University. He proudly
served as a Warrant Officer and First Lieutenant in the US Army during WWII. He married
Virginia Thompson on June 28, 1953 in Howard, KS. They lived in Ft. Scott until they moved to
Topeka in 1957 when Day opened the Kaufmann Hearing Aid Center which he owned and ran for
fifty years. He also had the pleasure to serve as Executive Director of the Kansas Hearing Aid
Society for over thirty years.

Day was a lifelong Presbyterian and held numerous committee and volunteer positions
in Ft. Scott and then at First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. He was affiliated with the American
Legion, VFW, Lions, Kiwanis, Camp Fire Girls, and a 32nd degree Mason (Blue Lodge). He also
served as Treasurer of Doorstep Inc. for seven years. Day was a devoted husband, father,
grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed boating with family and traveling. Day
was a lover of classical music and had a deep appreciation of a well manicured lawn.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; son Rodney (Elizabeth) Kaufmann (Tulsa), daughter
Elaine (Bill) Haner (Overland Park); grandchildren Megan Coffey (Chris), Scott Haner (Moriah),
Julie Large, Steven Kaufmann and David Kaufmann; and great-grandchildren Rowan, Peyton, and
Gage.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 23 at 3:00
p.m. The family wishes to thank the staff of Brewster Place for their care of Day.

First Presbyterian continues the practice of wearing face masks and using social distancing between pews.
