Lyman E. Brown

Lyman E. Brown, 81, of Topeka, departed this life on Saturday, August 27, 2016.

He was born December 19, 1934 in Ponca City, OK, the son of Edwin and Ellen (Avery) Brown.

He was a 1952 graduate of Newkirk High School, Newkirk, OK. He then attended college, during which time he went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad in the Argentine yards in Kansas City, beginning as a mechanical draftsman, retiring as a civil engineer in 1990 after 36 years of service.

In addition to working for the railroad, Lyman also worked as a land surveyor and a realtor which led to his interest in home improvement and "flipping" houses.

Lyman loved outdoor activities, especially farming, raising cattle, hunting and tinkering with machinery, his tractors in particular. He was also a very accomplished woodworker and imparted his skills to his children who carry on his teachings to this day. His work ethic and self expectations were nothing short of excellence.

He was a very loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather who led by example as how to treat others, living by the Golden Rule.

Lyman married Phyllis Anne Precht on December 1, 1956 in Kansas City, MO. She preceded him in death on August 30, 1986.

Survivors include daughters, Debbie Gendel (Jon), Cheryl Farmer (Donnie) and Susan Brown; a son, James Brown (Karen); grandchildren Nathan and Joe Gendel, Jessica Martin, Madilynn Thimmesch and Jacob Yaws; 5 great grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Brown and a sister, Monica McChristian.; significant other, Priscilla "Peggy" Mills.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and William Brown and a sister, Virginia Stuever.

Lyman will lie in state and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with burial to follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
