Lucy Virginia Anthony, 92, Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Midland Hospice House.
Lucy was born the daughter of John and Mary Gilmer Jones on May 24, 1913 on the family's farm near Oak Grove, Kentucky. She attended small country primary schools near Oak Grove prior to attending and graduating from the Bert High School in Clarksville, Tennessee.
She moved to Topeka in 1938 to reside with her older sister, Annie Mary Jones-Ward, and her family. She became employed at the Menninger Foundation as a nurses aide and remained employed there until her retirement.
Lucy Virginia was a long time member of Lane Chapel CME Church where she served as a church Stewardess. She also was a long term member of the Daughters of Isis, Oasis Court No. 44; Eastern Star-Rebecca Chapter No. 8; and The Golden Circle-Kaw Valley No. 80.
She married Bernard O. Anthony on November 15, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1995. Although there were no children born to their union, Lucy Virginia was a very nurturing and beloved mother to her numerous nieces and nephews. Following the death of her sister, Annie Mary, in 1944, Lucy Virginia raised her sister's two youngest children, Emmett W. Thompson Sr. and Joan M. Ward. She is survived by them. Other survivors include her sisters, Ernestine Allen and Mattie Billings, of Topeka and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at the Lane Chapel CME Church in Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Anthony will lie in state after 12:00 noon on Friday, October 21, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
