Lucy Jane Beisecker, 93, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 9, 2011. Jane Beisecker was born September 28, 1917, in Topeka, the only daughter of Earl David and Lucy Blanche (Bates) Keilman.
Beginning while she was in grade school, Jane performed on the pioneering WIBW radio show "The Children's Hour" as "Little Lucy Jane." Her father was "Uncle Dave," the host of this daily children's show.
Jane graduated from Topeka High School in 1935 and attended the University of Kansas. She was united in marriage to Lester Thomas Beisecker on July 21, 1939, in Topeka. Together they founded and operated Beisecker Sash & Door for over 30 years. Lester preceded her in death in 1993. Jane was a lifelong member of Topeka's First Presbyterian Church, Chapter AZ of P.E.O., AAUW, and Zonta Club of Topeka. She was a volunteer teacher and former Director of the Laubach Literacy Program at International House, Washburn University. She was an accomplished horsewoman, an avid bridge and cribbage player, a fan of opera and classical music, an enthusiastic traveler, a reader of history, a lover of Cape Cod, a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, a loyal friend, and spirited and generous family member.
Jane is survived by her son Thomas Beisecker, Baldwin City, KS, two daughters, Bonnie Isman, Amherst, MA and Beth Beisecker, Burlingame, CA, and five grandchildren, David Beisecker of Good Springs, NV, Randall Beisecker of Washington, DC, Eric Burnham of New York, NY, Matthew Burnham of Troy, NY and Katie Adams of Burlingame, CA.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Memorials may be directed to The Rescue Mission of Topeka, Topeka Literacy Council, and Topeka's First Presbyterian Church.
