Lucile Hisey

Lucile Catherine Hisey, 94, of Topeka, Kansas died Friday, November 14, 2008, at Brewster Place.

She was born October 14, 1914, the daughter of Warren James and Hattie Rhoades Hisey at Lenora, Kansas.

She graduated from Lenora Rural High School and at age 17 taught in a rural school which she continued to do for 5 years. She then attended Fort Hays State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kindergarten - Primary Education. Later she earned a Master of Science Degree from Kansas University. She took special courses in the teaching of reading at Greeley, Colorado State College.

Other teaching experiences were in the public schools of Scott City, Lawrence, and Topeka. In Topeka she was a primary teacher at Potwin, Whitson, Stout, and Randolph. She retired in 1982 after teaching 48 years.

On April 1975 she received the First Spark Award (Special Programming in the Arts for Kansas) given by the Kansas Art Commission. On October 1975 she was given an Award for Meritorious Teaching Achievement by the National Council for Geographic Education.

She was a member of Central Congregational Church and two church groups: Women's Fellowship and Group XI.

Organizations of which she was a member are: Life Member of the National Education Association, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Topeka Area Retired Teachers Association, Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of University Women, The Woman's Club of Topeka, Friends of the Topeka Public Library and Kansas Native Sons and Daughters.

Survivors include a niece, Carmen Rowley of Richardson, Texas and several great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Ruth Schoen and Margaret Moser and nephew, J. Bradley Moser.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka where she will lie in state from 12-Noon to 9:00 p.m., Monday. Graveside services and burial will be at the family plot in the Lenora, Kansas South Cemetery, November 19th at 2:00 p.m.
