Louise Axton-Steves-Opperud, 101, of Topeka, passed away January 7, 2013.
Louise was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, the daughter of James "Jim" and Hallie Fitzgibbon. She had one older sister, Georgie (deceased 1941). Louise married Charles "Bailey" Axton on 9 January, 1929 in Miami, Oklahoma. They had two sons: Charles Bailey II, born 27 October, 1932 and Robert David, born 15 September, 1941. Louise and family lived on the east coast where Bailey enjoyed a successful career as a singing star in radio. In 1949 he retired from performance and returned to Topeka and purchased radio station KTOP. He died of a brain tumor in 1963.
In 1965 Louise married Richard "Dick" Steves; they lived for a while in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. In 1968 they built a home on Docking Road, west of Topeka and resided there for nearly 20 years. Dick died of a massive heart attack in 1985.
Two years later Louise married Charles E. Opperud of Topeka.
They sold the home on Docking Road and moved to the Knollwood area where they maintained their home until Charles died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma in June of 2003. Louise moved to Brewster Place East in July of the same year.
Louise was a member of PEO, The Topeka Garden Club, The 1st Methodist Church, The Shawnee and Topeka Country Clubs and was active in the management of KTOP during the time the family owned the station.
She is survived by her two sons, Charles and David, her step-children Carol Steves-Meyers, Richard Steves, Chris Steves, grandchildren Rollo, Scott and Wade Axton, Lisa [Axton] Theriault and Christina [Axton] Ranellucci ,great-grandchildren Danielle Axton, Philip Axton, Ruth Ann Axton, and Avery and Samuel Theriault.

A memorial service will be held in the Brewster Place Chapel (main building), 1205 SW 29th Street, Topeka, at 4:00 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka, is handling arrangements.
