Louise Hummer

November 1, 1919 — October 14, 2016

Louise Marie Lungstrum-Hummer, 96, Topeka, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016.

Louise was born November 1, 1919 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Lena (Huff) Lungstrum. She was the second born of thirteen children. Louise grew up around east Topeka and the Oakland area. Growing up in the Depression Area, she knew what it was like going without food half the time. She was like a little mother to her brothers and sisters.

In 1940, she met her beloved future husband, Dana, while teaching dancing at the Egyptian Ballroom. She was like a daughter to the owners, Claude & Leona Busey. They really looked after her. She and Dana dated for three years. Dana went into the service and was stationed in Augusta, Georgia in the Army Air Force as an M.P. They were married in Aiken, South Carolina on March 16, 1943. Louise worked at Seymour Packing Co. then for two years at Forbes Air Force Supply Depot. Dana returned in 1945. Their only child, Nancy Louise, was born May 7, 1947.

Dana and Louise bought several properties and worked hard to make a good life for their daughter. Louise was over the room mothers and was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader during Nancy's school days. Dana had joined the Topeka Police Department in 1940 and was Chief of Police from 1963 to 1973. He retired and built Winterview Shopping Center. Dana passed away April 26, 2002. Nancy preceded him on August 12, 1966. On August 30, 2003, Hummer Sports Park was named after Dana and Louise.

Dana, Louise and Nancy (until her passing) were members of Oakland United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Dana and Louise were later members of Brookwood Covenant Church. Louise was on the Board of Directors at Topeka Cemetery.

Louise is survived by her siblings, Nettie "Tiny" Loader, Margie Henderson and Alan Lungstrum and a host of wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena and Frank Lungstrum, brothers, Franklin, Donald, Robert, Bill, Gale, Jerry and Ronnie and sisters, Lorraine Quall and Myrtle Mumford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hummer Sports Park, Washburn Endowment - Nancy Hummer Scholarship Fund, School of Nursing Scholarship Fund, Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund, Topeka Cemetery or Brookwood Covenant Church.

Louise will lie in state and family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Topeka Cemetery.
