Louise B. Wetlaufer

Louise Bartlette Wetlaufer passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL at the age of 101.

She was born February 7, 1906 in Lincoln, NE, the beloved daughter of Maude May and Harry M. Saunders. Most of her childhood was spent in Glen Elder, KS. After high school graduation, she taught first through eighth grade students in a rural one-room schoolhouse. In 1929, she married her high-school sweetheart, Carlyle Paxton Wetlaufer. Following their marriage, the Wetlaufers moved to western Kansas to continue their teaching and school administration careers. During the course of her teaching career, Louise attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, Hays Teacher's College, Hays and the University of Colorado, Boulder. Louise and Carlyle moved to Topeka in 1943 where both were very active in the Highland Park community. Louise began working in the Personnel Division of the State of Kansas in 1952 where she was employed for many years. At the age of 91, Louise moved to Naperville to join her daughter and family. She lived on her own until she was 98 years old.

Louise supported and was actively involved in many organizations throughout her life including the Highland Park United Methodist Church for over fifty years; Faith United Methodist Church in Lisle, IL; P.E.O. Chapters FI in Topeka, Kansas where she served as president, and Chapter MA in Naperville; Retired Teachers Association of Kansas and the Ethel Marshall Unit of the DuPage County Homemaker's Association. Traveling, bridge, and writing letters were favorite pastimes.

Louise was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and wonderful friend. She was adored and cherished by her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Harriet (Steve) Treacy of Naperville; granddaughters, Dr. Lisa (Tom) Lullo of Naperville, Heather (Joedy) Smith of Sycamore, IL; step-grandchildren, Margi (Greg) Trandel of Athens, GA, Dr. Steve (Tiffany) Treacy of Naperville and Paul Treacy of Washington D.C., Diane (Craig) Markovitz of Pittsburgh, PA; nephews, John (Dorothy) Schmersey of Aiken, GA, Doug (Kathy) Terry of Hill City, KS, and Dick (Mary) Terry of Council Bluffs, NE; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died in 1988 after celebrating sixty years of marriage that year; and a sister, Elizabeth Saunders Schmersey.

Services will be held on Thursday in Naperville. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Highland Park United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Glenwood Cemetery in Glen Elder, KS.
