CW0-3 Louis George Smith, Jr. 81, Lawrence, KS, passed away, Saturday, February 20, 2010.
He was born June 18, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA the son of Louis G. Smith and Caroline V. (Riley) Smith. He was raised in Conshohocken, PA and attended St. Matthew's Catholic School.
Louis left home at the age of 17 and joined the United States Air Force. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Upon joining the Army he attended flight school and earned his Silver Wings. Louis served in both Korea and Vietnam. He retired in September 1969.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Louis married Arlene O. Crable February 14, 1952 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Louis G. Smith III and his wife Lori, Lawrence, KS; Tina G. Ballentine her husband Jim, Delray Beach, FL; Richard C. Smith and his wife Michele, Tecumseh, KS; his sister, Joyce Gordon, Norristown, PA; five grandchildren, Chelsea Ballentine, Jami Ballentine, Courtney Smith, Louis G. Smith IV, Hanna Smith as well as five nieces.
Mr. Smith will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday February 26, 2010 at the funeral home followed by burial in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
