Louella (Henderson) Hobbs moved to Heaven on June 27, 2008.
She was the first child born to Dawson and Jessamine (Funk) Henderson in Winslow, AZ on Feb. 11, 1922. Two treasured sisters followed, Katherine (Henderson) Dunn, Roosevelt, AZ and Patsy (Henderson) Hoffman, The Dalles, OR.
The best part of childhood for the three sisters was the move they made each spring to the family's sheep ranch in the mountains just west of Heber, AZ. Many glorious days were spent playing in the cave high up on the hillside overlooking the ranch house.
Louella graduated from Chandler High School in Chandler, AZ and just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, boldly moved to Long Beach, CA to attend beauty college. While in California she found her one true love, and married Gerald C. Hobbs on June 20, 1946. Shortly after his discharge from the Navy, he brought her home to Kansas where she lived for most of the rest of her life. Jerry and Louella had two children, Bonnie (Hobbs) Paine of Topeka, and Michael Hobbs, Ketchum, ID. 1969 brought a painful divorce for Louella, but she soon focused her gentle tenacity toward work, manicuring her home and yard, and serving her church, family and friends. She chose never to remarry. She was especially committed to her beloved Berean Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church in Topeka, and she retired from work three times; first from civilian work at Forbes Air Force Base, then from the First National Bank, and finally from American Linen Supply, all in Topeka.
Louella was a tender, giving soul who always put the needs of her family and dear friends before her own. She will be greatly missed by her son, Michael Hobbs and his wife, Karen Bossick; by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Ed Paine; their two children Jake Paine and Jessie (Paine) and Jeff Everett; her three great-grandchildren, Alexis, Dawson, and Mason; her sisters, Katie and Pat; and her many friends.
Everyone who knew Louella loved her and now we await our reunion with her in Heaven.
Services are planned for 11:00 a.m., Wed., July 2, 2008, at the First Baptist Church, Topeka. Louella will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Tues. at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
Memorials may be sent to Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook, KS; the Berean Sunday School Class, First Baptist Church, Topeka; or the American Cancer Society.
