Louella Asklund
LouElla Asklund, 89, of Topeka, passed away, Friday, June 24, 2005 at Midland Hospice House.
LouElla was born August 27, 1915 in Washington County, KS, the daughter of F.G. and Anna Olson Magnus. She was born and raised on a farm 10 miles NE of Clyde, KS. She was the youngest of 8 children. LouElla had 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
She was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Swedish (now Brantford)Covenant Church.
LouElla graduated from Agenda High School in 1932. She sang in the glee club and girls trio in high school along with several musicals. In sports, she lettered in both basketball and track.
She moved to Topeka in 1934. She joined the Bethel (later Brookwood) Covenant Church where she held several positions and sang in the choir for over 50 years. For a time, she sang in a church quartet on WIBW radio on Sunday mornings. LouElla also sang at numerous weddings and funerals.
One of her first jobs was working in the bridal department of Crosbys. She worked there many years. LouElla then worked at KP&L in the payroll department. While her children were growing up, she worked as a teacher's aide. Later she returned to work at KP&L..
LouElla was known for her friendly and outgoing nature. Many people remember her as the first person to meet them at church or McCrite Plaza Retirement Community where she lived for the past 15 years.
LouElla married Wendell B. Asklund on December 16, 1945 shortly after he returned from serving in the US Navy in World War ll. They were happily married for 55 years. He preceded her in death in 2001.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Asklund, Topeka and a son, Clair W. Asklund and his wife Carol, Stoneham, MA.
Funeral services will be held 9:30am Monday, June 27, 2005 at the Brookwood Covenant Church. Graveside services will follow at 1:30pm at the Brantford Covenant Cemetery in Washington County, Kansas. LouElla will lie in state at the funeral home after noon on Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be given to Brookwood Covenant Church, 3601 SW 33rd, Topeka, Kansas 66614. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
