Lorene Cummings

Lorene "Renie" Cummings, 82, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014 at her home. She was born January 14, 1932 in the outskirts of Kincaid, KS, the only child of Loren M. and Jennie M. Smith Stanton in the farmhouse her father built. Her great-grandmother, on her father's side was full blooded Cherokee Indian. She was very proud of this heritage.

At age 5, the family moved to Lyons, KS, where she grew up and attended school. After high school graduation, she began work with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 30 years before retiring in 1989.

From the 1940's thru the 1970's, she was very active in bowling, belonging to Leagues in Lyons, Sterling, Hutchinson and Topeka. She was a member of the WBA 600 Club. One of her most enjoyable interests was spending countless hours in her yard, working with her many plants and flowers and enjoying the variety of birds and other wildlife that visited her yard. She was a life member of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers of America, American Legion Capitol Post No. 1 Auxiliary and a volunteer for the Colmery-O'Neil V.A. Medical Center.

Her first marriage ended in divorce after 19 years. On June 30, 1972, she married Thomas A. Smith of Topeka. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1995 after a 13 year illness. On April 18, 1997, she married Robert L. Cummings of Topeka. He passed away June 2, 1998 after heart surgery. Survivors include five children, son, Roc S. Smith, step-sons, James T. (Agnes) Smith, Randall Cummings, step-daughters, Cindy (Bill) Van Doren, Ginger (Stan) Unruh, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Renie requested cremation and for no memorial services to be held. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Lyons Cemetery, Lyons, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, 1315 SW Arrowhead Rd., Topeka, KS 66604, the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 8630, Topeka, KS 66618, Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., Topeka, KS 66614 or to the VA Eastern Kansas Medical Center, Attn: Stroke Group, 2200 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66622. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
