Lorene B. Stuenkel, 90, of Topeka passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 12, 2003 . She was born near Bancroft, KS to Will and Emma Heers Miller and grew up in the Netawaka community.
Lorene moved to Topeka in 1945 and operated a home laundry service for 11 years. She worked for Hillmer Leather Store from 1955 until she retired in 1991. She was a very dedicated Christian and active member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She served in the LWML, St. John's Women's League, Lutheran Social Services, and Lutheran World Relief Sewing Group, Lorene was also a longtime former Sunday school teacher.
On January 29, 1934 she married Henry G. Stuenkel, he passed away on November 30, 1944. A daughter, Evelyn Sunderland, passed away on June 27, 1999. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Tom Crume of Topeka, her son, Walter Stuenkel of Topeka, son-in-law, Donald Sunderland of Rockaway Beach, MO. ; 6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Mrs. Stuenkel will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town on Wednesday beginning at Noon, the family will receive friends from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be in St. John's Lutheran Church on Thursday at 10:30 am, with graveside services in Netawaka Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka Lutheran School or donor's choice, sent in care of the funeral home.
