Lora Alwinnie Canaday, 97, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka. She was born on March 25, 1911 near Wakarusa, the daughter of Dan Newton and Alwinnie Meyners Morris. She lived her entire life in the Topeka area. She married and divorced Homer W. Sykes. She later married Ron Gibson and Charlie Canaday. They preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a brother, three sisters, and a great-grandson. She worked at the Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She was a lifetime member of the Good Sam Club, District 4 and a past member of Helena Chapter No. 210 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Canaday is survived by her son, Morris W. Sykes of Kansas City, MO; five granddaughters; Treva Harris, Pamela Lassen, and Kim Aeillo of Topeka; Sherry Sykes of Olathe and Lisa Hamon of McLouth; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Canaday will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2001 S.
