LOIS MUNGER (Secrease) 1925 - 2014
Lois Esther Munger (nee Secrease) passed from this life on July 20th. She was preceded in death by her parents: George and Myrtle Secrease of Ellsinore, Missouri; her husband, the Rev. Orrin Lloyd Munger; and son, Steven Lloyd Munger. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Munger (George Petros) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, grandsons Richard, Eric, and Ryan Munger, and Christopher Petros. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lois was deeply committed to her family and faith. As part of this, her professional life was focused on the healthy development of children. She attended the University of California at Berkeley and University of California at Long Beach, receiving a BA in Early Childhood Education. She started nursery schools at the churches where her husband, Lloyd, served as Minister of Christian Education; the First Baptist Church of Santa Ana, CA, the First Baptist Church of St Paul, MN and the First Baptist Church of Topeka, KS. She served as director of each nursery school. She also worked as a substitute teacher in St Paul and Topeka. Lois shared her knowledge and experience; acting as an instructor at many seminars and national laboratory schools. She was a member of the American Association of University Women.
Lois will always be remembered for her painstaking genealogical research into the Secrease – Sechrist Families of Southeastern Missouri. Her letter-writing and studies led to a book: A Medley of Memories (An Ozark Childhood). Our family will always fondly remember Lois and the 'booth' of pictures and articles she would bring to family reunions in Missouri looking to place names on old pictures and gather stories in her ongoing effort to complete our family tree. Lois was a talented pianist with perfect pitch. If you could hum it, she could play it.
Our family would like to thank the wonderful people at Brewster Health Care Center, particularly the staff at Eagle Ridge for their kindness and excellent care of our beloved Lois.
Memorial service will be 11 am Friday, July 25 at First Baptist Church, Topeka. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Inurnment will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town is assisting the family. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Daycare Center, 3033 SW Mac Vicar Ave, Topeka, KS 66611.
