Lois M. Metzler Arthur, 100, passed away on September 5, 2011. Lois was born December 26, 1910 in Topeka, to Earl and Mabel Chandler. She was preceded in death by son, Earl Chandler "Chan" Metzler and husbands, Haskell "Hank" B. Metzler and David G. Arthur.
She strongly believed that all children needed loving and supportive care. During the 1940's, she was a foster parent for the Kansas Children's Service League. Throughout her life, she sponsored children around the world as a way to provide opportunities for children in need. In the 1960's, she was a dormitory "House Mother" at Washburn University where she encouraged students to pursue the education that would lead to a fulfilling life.
Her lifelong passions included reading, teddy bear collecting, and caring for her family. She was a published writer of poetry and an avid genealogy researcher. She was a strong believer in volunteering and after retiring, volunteered at DoorStep and Let's Help.
She will be missed by many, especially by her family and friends. Surviving family members include; Lucy A. Shifton, Wichita; Dr. Wesley C. Jones, Emporia, Donald Shifton, Susan Loy (Robert Holubec) Wichita, Todd Jones, Independence, KY, Carrie (Ed) Serrano, Emporia, and Rebecca (Brian) Harrod, Topeka. Other special people in her life include; Dr. Doug Frye, Gene Shifton and Dorthea Puckett.
A memorial has been established at the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library Foundation for the Large Print Book Collection.
Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.
