Lloyd Russell "Monty" Montgomery, 94, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Lloyd was born May 27, 1919 in Arrington, KS, the son of Earl and Edna (Hunn) Montgomery. He graduated from Valley Falls High School and attended the University of Kansas.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, assigned to the Corps of Engineers, serving in both the European and Philippine theaters.
He worked for the Federal Housing and Urban Development, serving as Chief Architect for 16 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for 30 years, served as Associate District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts, was a scout leader most of his adult life, and received the coveted Silver Beaver Award. He was an honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say where he was known as White Arrow Stone, He was also a member of the Downtown Optimist Club, past President of the Topeka Gem and Mineral Society, and past President of N.A.R.F.E. After retirement, he volunteered as a driver with the American Red Cross.
Lloyd married Louellen Hoskinson on July 1, 1939 in Oskaloosa. She died September 4, 2013. Survivors include their children, Bruce (Marcia) Montgomery, Lenexa, Deborah (Bill) Scanland, Cinda Kunkler (Chuck Curtis), Melissa (Kai) Follmer and Jana (Russ) Cook, all of Topeka; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; brother, Ted Montgomery, Valley Falls; and sisters, Dorothy Schneider, Ft. Worth, TX, and Doris Greene, Topeka.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Lowman United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
