Leslie “Les” Hughes, 76, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024.
He was born August 22, 1947, in Burlington, Kansas, the son of Floyd and Elizabeth (Plain) Hughes. He graduated from Waverly High School. Following graduation, he attended Kansas State Teachers College now known as Emporia State University and earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree.
Les married Patricia "Pat" Maurene Sheridan on August 31, 1968 in Elwood, KS. They welcomed one son, Aaron, to their union of marriage.
He dedicated 40 years of service to the State of Kansas as a Labor Negotiator.
Les and Pat attended church at First Southern Baptist Church.
In his spare time, you would find Les on the golf course. He was a World War II and Civil War history buff. Les loved to travel with his family and would often travel to see other family members. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, but also enjoyed goofing around with his nieces and nephews.
He leaves behind his wife, Pat Hughes; their son, Aaron (Laurie) Hughes; two grandchildren, Connor Hughes and Amanda Hughes; and his siblings, Susan Hughes, Allen Hughes, Harold (Robin) Hughes, Michael (Kathryn) Hughes and Dan (Pam) Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Daryl Hughes, Joseph Hughes and Patrick Hughes.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm., Friday, August 16, 2024, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. In his honor, memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Rescue Mission, Inc. PO Box 8350, Topeka, KS 66608.
