Leota M. Thurber Cavender

Lee Cavender, 95, of Topeka, passed away, Tuesday, May 29, 2007. She was born July 11, 1911 in Richland, KS, the daughter of Carl and Louise (Nelson) Thurber.

She graduated from Abilene High School in 1929 and attended Emporia State Teacher's College. Lee was an elementary school teacher in several one-room school houses in rural Northeast Kansas. She was later employed by Sante Fe Railroad and Crosby's Dept. Store in Topeka.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and of the Alpha Chapter, Delta Theta Chi Sorority in Topeka.

Lee and Ward E. Cavender were united in marriage on April 19, 1943 in Abilene, KS. They spent all of their married life in Topeka. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2000.

She is survived by her son, Mark Cavender and his wife, Christine, grandchildren, Breanne Heather, Kristen Cavender, Jason Spencer, all of Topeka, and Amie Byrd of Oak Ridge, NC, and eight great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

A memorial service for Lee will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 4, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Topeka. Graveside Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 5th at Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, KS. Memorial contributions may be given to Grace United Methodist Church, Topeka or to Richland, Kansas Historical Society in care of the funeral home.
