Leonard Walker, 96, of Topeka, passed away Friday, July 10, 2020.
He was born March 26, 1924, in Boswell, Oklahoma, the son of Verdia and Pearlie Mae (Spears) Walker. He graduated from Boswell High School in 1942.
Leonard proudly served in the United States Air Force for 20 years as a fire fighter. After retiring from the Air Force, Leonard was employed by the Topeka VA Hospital for 20 years. Leonard was honored to serve his county. He was a man of civic service, of valor and courage, and one to never give up.
Leonard enjoyed fishing at Lake Perry and Lake Pomona, tending to his vegetable garden, relaxing in his spare time, hunting, and working on old muscle cars. He liked to "tinker" and detail the cars to perfection. His favorite cars include Mustangs, Barracudas, and Mercury's.
He married Shanna Oakes in Topeka, KS in 1976. She was a tender and loving care-giver for Leonard until his demise.
Survivors include his wife; his only child, Barbara Jean Gibson; son-in-law, William Gibson; two granddaughters, Jeanine Tate and Jacqueline Tinnin; one great-grand daughter, Zipporha Bass; two nieces, Yolanda Stephens and Sharon Bacon and a cousin Ralph Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Mrs. LeRee Bass.
A public visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1,2020 at Mount Hope Cemetery in the Veteran Garden, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS. Following the visitation there will be a ceremony celebrating Leonard's life with military honors.
