Leonard Ross Freeman, 95, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018.
He was born May 7, 1922 in Lyndon, KS, the son of Ross T. and Pearl O. Freeman.
After high school Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the SEABEE's from 1942 until 1945.
Upon returning to Kansas after World War II, he worked for the Supply Depot at Forbes Air Force Base until 1961.
He then went to work as an Engineering Equipment Operator Foreman for the U.S. Civil Service, operating heavy equipment on the flight lines at the Air Base, retiring after more than 30 years of service.
Leonard joined the Methodist Church in Melvern, KS in 1950 and was an active member of Highland Park United Methodist Church for many years.
He was a true outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and always looked forward to camping with friends. He was one of the founding members of the Topeks Camping Club and stayed active with the club for many years. Leonard and his wife Mary were also members of the Swinging Square square dancing club. Most of all, Leonard will be remembered as one of the best storytellers that ever lived.
Leonard married Virginia Campbell in June of 1947. They were divorced 1956. To this union a son, Robert Wayne Freeman was born in 1949. He preceded his father in death in 1964.
He later married Mary A. Jackson on September 30, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2014.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Jantzen (Mike) of Platte City, MO; a son Robert Small (Sherry) of Carbondale; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; a brother, John Freeman of San Diego, CA and a sister, Ann Thompson of El Cajon, CA.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, George, William and Earl Freeman.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 27 at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S. E. Michigan, Topeka, KS 66605. A graveside committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Half Day Cemetery, 3675 NW 62th St., Topeka, KS 66618.
