Leona D. Wilson, 95, died at the Midland Hospice on Saturday, October 14, 2006.
Leona Long was born in Lawrence, KS November 16, 1910. Raised in Lawrence, she attended KU, worked as a legal secretary then at the State Employment Service. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge until 1943. She married Elmer W. Wilson in 1943 and they moved to Topeka, where she lived until her death.
Leona enjoyed traveling to visit her family and to join them in family vacations. She delighted in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved sewing and baking, made time to help others and enjoyed reading, playing and listening to music and hand crafts. She was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and Deacon.
Leona is survived by her children: Rev. Ronald D. Wilson (Ruth) of Owatonna, MN; Stephen D. Wilson (Judy) of Meriden, KS; and Nancy L. Ellison (Jim) of Silver Lake, KS; four grandchildren: Christine Ellison, Amy Messina, Rebecca McBurney and Andy Wilson and four great grand-children: Emily and Sophia Messina and Ryleigh and Jadyn McBurney. Leona was preceded in death by her husband Elmer "Bill" Wilson and granddaughter Rachael Wilson.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Monday, October 16 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A funeral service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1275 Boswell, at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 17, with visitation at the church from 10-11 AM. Burial will be at 1:30 PM on Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
