Leon R. Cochenour, Jr., of Topeka, passed away July 12, at the age of 56, surrounded by his family. He was born on January 23, 1950 in Wichita, KS, grew up in Wichita and Topeka, and graduated in 1968 from Topeka High School.
Soon after graduation, Leon joined the Army as a Medical Corpsmen, serving from September 1969 to May 1975 with the 47th Field Hospital 1st Medical Group. While serving in Vietnam, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Medical Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Expert Badge for Rifle. Leon remained active in the local Vietnam Veterans Association.
On August 26, 1988, Leon married Vickie Meirowsky. In 1993 their daughter, Paige, was born. Leon had been employed as a computer technician. He was a devoted husband and father, who realized the importance of his family and friends.
Leon is survived by his wife, Vickie, daughter, Paige, both of the home, his sister, Janice Cochenour, of Erie, Kansas, in-laws, Ken and Donna Meirowsky, brother-in-law and wife, Tim and Liz Meirowsky, two nieces, one nephew, and his two dogs, Wally and Coco.
He is preceded in death by his father, Leon R. Cochenour, Sr., and mother Katherine Glisson Cochenour.
The service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, July 17, 2006 at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 pm on Sunday, July 16th at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
