Leon F. Condley, 85, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka. He was born on August 10, 1924 in Bowie, TX, the son of Paul J. and Adella C. Ginn Condley. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. Leon was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving on the William C. Miller naval carrier. Leon was employed as a fireman for the City of Topeka for 32 years before retiring in 1984. He was also employed by the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center for 37 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of Crestview United Methodist Church. Leon married Lois I. Hildenbrand on September 9, 1956 in Stull, KS. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Julia (David) Strobel of Topeka, one son, Roy Condley of Topeka, two grandchildren, Jennifer Shofe and Janelle Lida (Vince) Strobel-DiGennaro, one great-grandson, Tony DiGennaro, two sisters, Hazel Basker of Mishawaka, IN and Ann (Merle) Bradley of Casscade, CO. Leon was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Condley and Art Condley. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Crestview United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Stull Cemetery southeast of Topeka at 1:30 p.m. Leon will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Crestview United Methodist Church, 2245 SW Eveningside Dr., Topeka, KS 66614 or to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd., Topeka, KS 66617.
