Mrs. Leola M. "Jimmy" Monthey, 83, of Topeka passed away Thursday, July 18, 2002 in a local hospital. She was born in Oak Hill, KS on October 29, 1918 to John G. and Mary E. Evans James.
Mrs. Monthey graduated from Clay Center High School in 1936. She then moved to Topeka and attended and graduated from Stewart's Beauty Academy. Upon graduation, she went to work and was a beauty operator in several different shops. Mrs. Monthey operated a beauty shop in her home in Oakland from 1946 until the mid 1970's. During WWII she worked at John Morrell Meat Packing, later she worked at American Yearbook Company. Mrs. Monthey was a member of First Lutheran Church, Queen of Spades Flower Club and Ladies of The Moose, Lodge #555.
On November 4, 1939, in Kansas City, Mo. she married Ernest N. Monthey, he survives and lives in Topeka. Mrs. Monthey's greatest career was 63 years of marriage. Other survivors include one son Steven F. Monthey of Concord, OH, 2 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandson.
The family will receive friends from 2-3pm on Sunday, July 21, 2002 in Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Mrs. Monthey will lie in state on Sunday from 2pm to 9pm. Funeral services will be Monday, July 22, 2002 at 1:00pm, Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
