Lenora M. Swearingen
87, died April 4, 2004 at McCrite Plaza inTopeka. Mrs. Swearingen was born August 26, 1916 near Lecompton, KS, the daughter of Ermal L. and Victoria M. Mellenbruch.
After graduation in 1934 from Lecompton Rural High School, Mrs. Swearingern attended Emporia Teachers's College for two years and later graduated from Washburn University with a B.Ed in Education in 1961. she taught elementary school for 16 years, having begun teaching in a one room school. She retired from the Topeka school system in 1974.
Mrs. Swearingen was a member of the Kansas National Education Association, a member of the County Extension Club many years, and a member of the Good Sam Camping Club participating in local, state, and international Samborees for several years.
She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Through the years, she a has served as deaconess, elder, PW leader, and teacher.
Lenora and Marion Swearingen were united in marriage August 26, 1939 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Emporia, Ks. Marion passed away in 1999.
Other survivors include two daughters, Sharon K. Fenton, Topeka and Joyce A. Sasse, Columbia, MO, and a son Richard A. Swearingen, Topeka as well as seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Three sisters, Doris W. Peterson, Virginia A. Mellenbruch, both of Topeka, and Carolyn B. Everly, Kansas City, KS
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, April 8, 2004 at Penwell Gabel Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Osage City Cemetery. Mrs. Swearingen will lie in state from 1:00pm Wednesday until service time and a visitation will be held from 6:00PM to 8:00PM that evening at the funeral home.
