Leland R. Porter, age 79, passed away on November 13, 2008 at Midland Hospice Care in Topeka. He was the son of Walter and Alice Hall Porter, who preceded him in death. Leland grew up in Wetmore and graduated from WetmoreHigh School in 1947. In 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Arlene Trimble. After serving four years in the Air Force, they settled in Topeka.
By trade, Leland was a meat cutter for 27 years and during this time he was also in housing construction. His greatest joy was moving back to the farm and raising cattle. Leland also really enjoyed his tractors, both old and new.
Leland was a Past Master of the Goff Masonic Lodge and a member of the Holton American Legion and V.F.W. He was honored with 50 year pins of the Blue Lodge, the ArabShrineTemple and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a member of the Arab Topless Unit, a member of the Order of Quetzalcoatl and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters.
Leland is survived by his wife, Ruth, cousins and many good friends.
Masonic funeral rites will be conducted in the Mt. Hope Chapel at 17th and Fairlawn in Topeka at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2008. Leland will lie in state after 1:00 p.m., on Friday, November 14, 2008 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS.
