Leah Joan Hale

November 17, 1933 — June 30, 2018

Leah Joan "Jo" Hale, 84, passed away June 30, 2018 in Topeka.

Leah Jo Hale was born on November 17, 1933, in Birmingham, Kansas to Howard and Mary Braum Longenecker. She grew up in the Birmingham, Denison, and Holton communities. She graduated from Denison High School and then went to Topeka where she worked for National Reserve Life Insurance Company as cashier and correspondent for the company. She later worked for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in the Food, Drug and Lodging Section of the Bureau of Consumer Health as licensure of restaurants and lodging facilities through the state for 25 years. She then worked as a para-educator for Auburn-Washburn School District #437.

Jo was an active Campfire Girl Leader for many years and assisted with a Boy Scout Troop. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church for 25 years and taught a Sunday School class for several years. She later was a Charter Member of Western Hills Baptist Church. She was an avid enthusiast of her children and grandchildren's activities, and rarely missed a ballgame at Washburn Rural, Ken Berry, or a band concert.

She met Charles Neal (Chuck) Hale and they were married when he was stationed in Topeka from assignment with the 90th Armament and Electronics Squadron. They were married for 33 years.

Jo is survived by a son, John Michael Hale (Leslie), Topeka; a daughter, Lisa Jo Campbell, Topeka; two grandchildren, John Michael Hale, Jr. and Madeline Camille Hale, Topeka. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Sandra, and her son-in-law John William Campbell.

Jo loved animals. She also had a passion for cooking and baking for others. She overcame numerous obstacles in life, and her son-in-law once duly noted she was the strongest person he ever knew.
