Lawrence E. "Larry" Sims, 95, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018.
He was born June 26, 1922, in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Adam and Lena (Sexton) Sims. He was a 1943 graduate of Longford High School and was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. He then received a Bachelor's Degree in Business from Washburn University in 1980.
Larry was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Santa Fe Railway Co., and then retired from du Pont de Nemours in 1984, as a Control Mechanic, after 26 ½ years.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder, and volunteered for Doorstep, Inc. He enjoyed square dancing, fishing, and babysitting grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1650, American Legion Post 0058, and the Dover Masonic Lodge #138.
Lawrence married Barbara Marie Martin on August 14, 1948, in Eskridge, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 20, 1999.
Survivors include son, Gregory (Donna McCormick) Sims; daughter, Janice (Mike) Hogan; grandchildren, Todd (Jennifer) Haag, Tracie (Denver) Holcomb, and Terry (Christina) Haag; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and sisters-in-law, Joan Martin and Julia Sims.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Dean Sims and Roger James Sims; and brother-in-law, Max O. Martin.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2018, at Central Presbyterian Church, 920 SW Huntoon, Topeka. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be provided at the church. Interment will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Doorstep, Inc., Topeka Rescue Mission, or Salvation Army.
