Lavonne B. Birney

LaVonne B. (Souther) Birney, 84, of Topeka, was promoted to glory on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

She was born December 5, 1936, in Minot, North Dakota, the daughter of Raymond and Julia (Long) Souther. She graduated from Model High School in 1955. After graduation, she worked various jobs until she married James Birney on October 15, 1961. Together they entered the Salvation Army School for Officers Training in Chicago, IL as part of the Victorious Session in 1969. Together they served in Salvation Army ministry for 32 years, retiring in 2002 with the rank of Major.

LaVonne loved reading her bible, especially Psalms. She also enjoyed crafting, quilting, scrapbooking, bird watching, camping, listening to music and playing in the Salvation Army Band. She loved her pets Penny, Missy, Shannon, Tiny, Blacky the cat, Tootie, and Pal. LaVonne enjoyed baking and her Russian Tea Cakes were spectacular.

LaVonne's love for Jesus was evident in the many ways she invested her time, energy, and heart into the people she served. Others found her a joy to serve with, talented, and dedicated to serving the Lord.

Survivors include a her daughters, Beatrice "Bea" (Terry) Kennedy and Annette (John) A. Talbot; grandchildren, Aubrey (Stephen) Kocsis, Jordan (Chris Hayes) Talbot and Steven Talbot; one great grandchild, Mara Mercedes Talbot; and sister, Deraine Freelander.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Birney on December 20, 2020. After a ten month separation, LaVonne and James are together again and walking with Jesus. Can you imagine the reunion?

LaVonne was also preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Violet Erber, Bonnie Kjelbertson, Rose Kallias, Evelyn Preskey, Sylvester "Sal" McNabb and Adeline Carroll.

A joint funeral service for both James and LaVonne will be at 11:00am on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Penwell-Gabel Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the funeral service at Memorial Park Cemetery, in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Captain Robert F. Birney Endowed CMI Scholarship, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64111.
